Top 5 Ways to Save Money on Halloween Costumes

What is Halloween without Halloween costumes? But the one thing I eagerly look forward to is the time when kids come to my door for the purpose of treating-or-tricking. For the uninitiated, “treating-or-tricking” means that children come to your door wearing impish and ghoulish costumes, and ask for candies.

Money Bag HandbagIf you don’t give them what they want, god help you, because mischievous tricks would follow! How mischievous the trick would be would depend on the imp (child) but it generally involves throwing eggs, flours and other stuff into your letter box or through your house’s windows. So this is the reason why you should not be miserly at this time, even if you are otherwise a self-confessed Scrooge!

As far as I am concerned, I really like giving to kids and therefore, I have never faced their brunt. Giving is so much rewarding that it makes the giver happier than the taker. Moreover I love kids anyway. It is fun to see those cute mischievous faces under the ghoulish masks as they start revealing once you are done giving them the sweets!

In the past, children would visit door to door for treating and tricking without any adult’s guidance. However, since the present times are bad I suggest that children should have an adult or two in their group when visiting neighboring houses, for safety reasons!

Anyway, the main purpose of this article is not to bore you telling what I love about Halloween, but how to save money on Halloween. So let us go to that point.

Split the costs: If you share a cordial relationship with your neighbors then saving money becomes easy; not only that, your Halloween could be more fun and exciting than you could imagine! For example, let us say that a certain Halloween costume is so pricey that it is well beyond your reach. But how about asking your neighbors or friends to share the costs?

Don’t be shy. An old saying goes that “Ask and ye shall receive”. You never know how many neighbors are exactly in that same boat and might be willing to share costs with others! While it is not necessary, I generally prefer to return favors by giving something of my own to my neighbors as a token of appreciation for their help!

Make your own: If you are good at making costumes then nothing like it. If you do a little digging in your house, you will surely find dozens of old, useless or torn clothes; you can use these bits and scraps of clothes to make the costume! In fact, if you use clothes of different colors, it would only add to the beauty of your Halloween costume.

Barter with your neighbor: If you cannot craft the costume yourself, you can ask one of your neighbors to do it. In return, you can lend them your garden where they could put up a scary graveyard. This way, everyone would benefit!

Create the scary effect without the help of costumes: If none of the above ideas help you, there is yet another way to save cash. Just get a decent Halloween costume that is affordable. That costume may not be your favorite and may not look as scary as you would want, but you could easily make up for the difference by buying some make-up, contact lenses or masks, depending on the personality of the character you want to become!

Believe it or not, contact lenses enhance the scary effect and attract the eyes of others faster than do costumes!

Buy online: Buying online is also an option provided that you have got internet connection at home and a credit card. Just log on to the internet and browse to your online store and buy it. Get your costume shipped to your door in less than two weeks! From my experience I can say that Halloween costumes, or for that matter ANY costume, are cheaper when you buy it online (compared to your local costume store)!
