Ghoulish costumes are also a direct result of those superstitions: while masks would hide a person’s head from the bad spirits, costumes would hide the body!

These days, you have a wide variety of Halloween costumes to choose from, and you don’t have to scare people if you don’t want to either! If you are a woman of benevolent nature, then perhaps the nurse costume would be a better fit for you than some ghoulish costume. On the other hand, if you are of mischievous nature and want to get some fun by scaring others, then a witch or werewolf costume would be more suitable for you!
While you can get into any type of costume, you would want to pick one you can carry off well, or else it would be a waste of money and the fun would be lost!

Price is also something you should consider while buying a Halloween costume. More often that not, I have noticed that the more elaborate the costume, the more you pay up. However, if you are determined to shop for a readymade dress, make sure you venture early so you can take advantage of early bird discounts and save some money that way! Keep in mind that late birds only get the leftovers, that too, at a premium price!

One last thing to keep in mind is that you don’t need to buy an expensive costume to scare someone on the Halloween night! If you cannot get a costume that is “good enough” for you, don’t worry; you can fill the gap with some makeup and other accessories!

1. If you thought that crooked women wear only black dresses, think again. Jessica Rabbit has successfully broken that myth by wearing a red dress instead of a black one. There are so many red dresses out there that you would be spoilt for choice. A few things to consider when buying the dress are:

-The color and hue of the dress. Ideally you would want a dress that is as red as red rose or red ruby!

-The dress should not be too loose. It fact, the tighter it is, the better!

-The dress should reveal your cleavage a bit. If you are not comfortable with that, you can opt for the ones with spaghetti straps. Just remember that Jessica Rabbit was an amoral character so you would be better off not trying to put up a plain Jane look!

-The red dress worn by Jessica Rabbit usually has a slit in the middle that goes up to her thighs. If you are not able to find a red dress like that, you can always make the slit yourself at home. This has an additional advantage too since you are able to control the length of the slit.

You can make the slit go only up to your knees, thighs, or whatever you like. Be very careful when cutting the slit and don’t forget to stitch the top end of the slit, or your dress may start tearing away from there!

If you are not comfortable with a slit at the front side, you can slit the right and left sides of the dress instead! It was not the kind of slit Jessica’s dress has, but hey, nobody told you that you need to go by the book!

2. Hair is one thing that adds to the sexiness of a woman, and Jessica knows this only too well. She is not fortunate enough to be born with luscious red locks, so she opts for a red wig! Unless you have great locks to be proud of, you should also opt for a red wig to complement your Jessica Rabbit look. If you cannot find it anywhere in your locality, you should almost always find a cheap one from an online store!

3. Jessica Rabbit is a woman belonging to high society, and as such, her attire is a bit typical. She protects her tender hands with gloves of blue color. The blue color of the gloves is in sharp contrast to the luscious red color of the red dress that she wears. If you are not able to find a pair of blue gloves at your local store, try a departmental store, women’s accessories shop or a bridal store!

Even if you have never done it before in life, creating your unique Halloween costume is not that hard! If you follow my step by step approach, you will have a scary and frightening costume done up in no time. However, it is important that you start the process right now! Don’t wait until it is too late!

1. Sketching the personality: The very first thing you need to do is to make a fair sketch of your Halloween character on a piece of paper, because anything you write on paper would get imprinted on your mind. Once you have a clear idea of the type of costume you need to make, the road would not seem too difficult to tread into!

2. Collect bits and pieces of clothes: One reason why I asked you to start early is that you would need some time to collect bits and pieces of various clothes that maybe lying inside your house. If you have wedding or bridesmaid clothes, prom gowns, shocks, towels, ties, bag cloth pieces, formal suits, casuals, gloves, etc., pick them up all!

Don’t be too judgmental at this stage: pick up everything that catches your eye. You never know which piece of cloth would come to your aid when making the costume. Also, don’t worry if all the clothes you collect are not of the same color; if you are a little creative, you would find it easier to make a monstrous out of multi-colored clothes than with same-colored clothes!

Do you have some old ladies in your neighborhood who you believe may have outdated clothes in their cupboards or closets? If yes, you can visit them and ask them to lend some of those clothes to you. With old, antique clothes you would be able to make a costume of a Victorian or early 20th century Halloween monster. Now, doesn’t that sound fun and exciting?

3. Don’t be a perfectionist: Far too many people waste their precious time making their Halloween costumes look “perfect”. Believe me, you don’t need to have a perfect costume; it just needs to REPRESENT your character, even if in a VAGUE manner! That is right, it does not have to match the character exactly!

Just start making the costume and I am sure you would get plenty of creative ideas along the way. You can even ask your friends to give you a helping hand in need; remember that two heads are always better than one!

4. Get the extras: Would a monster look frightening without his weapons? No. So, along with creating a monstrous costume, you also need to buy the accessories that you believe should be a part of the character the costume represents. Accessories can be anything ranging from Halloween contact lenses, make-up, masks, toy guns, etc.

It must be remembered that Halloween originally started as a pagan festival. Back then, it used to be celebrated by the Celts and was known as Samhain. The name Halloween derives its name from “All Hallows’ Day” as Halloween used to take place on All Hallows’ Eve.

As a matter of fact, Celts used to start their day differently than us; instead of sunrise, they used to begin their day after the sunset. That is why “Samhain” used to be celebrated on “All Hallows’ Eve”. All Hallows’ Eve is now celebrated a day after Halloween and is renamed as “All Saints’ Day”.

There is a reason why Celts celebrated Samhain. They used to believe that on the night of 31st October, ghosts of the dead come out from their graves, visit the mortal world and bring dangerous damages to the mortal world by infecting the mortals with diseases, damaging their houses and crops, etc.

That is the reason why on that day Celts used to paint their faces in soot to appear ghoulish to the spirits; they believed that this would be enough to scare the spirits away and thus the Celts would be safe from any harm! Later on masks were invented as a replacement to the face-paint. Now you know why people wear ghoulish and scary masks and make-up on the night of Halloween!

Coming back to gift baskets, there are lots of ways you can fill up a gift baskets. Traditionally, Halloween is associated with the “evil” spirits such as ghosts, goblins, vampires, witches, etc. It is also associated with certain birds and animals such as black cats, bats, spiders, cobwebs, scarecrows, etc., because of their frightening and dangerous appearances. Keeping that in mind, you can put some of the following things as gifts in your gift baskets:

a) Halloween candies or popcorns shaped in scary figures such as goblins, ghosts, witches, etc

b) A booklet or manual on how to carve a jack-o-lantern from a pumpkin

c) Halloween scrapbooks. I usually paste Halloween invitation cards (or their cut-offs), party photos and other stuff associated with Halloween in those scrapbooks. It adds a personal touch to the scrapbooks and believe me, the recipients would feel it!

d) A flash light shaped in the form of pumpkin. This light can be of any color but the common preference for Halloween seems to be the orange colored mini-lights for they go very well with the color of pumpkin. Such lights can be used for decoration purposes!

e) Dress a robust black cat as a witch or goblin and put it in the basket. You can bet the recipients would get their shock of life as they open the gift basket!

But say that you are not able to get your favorite costume either because it is too pricey or out of stock, and as a result, you have to settle for something less spooktacular. Will you still be able to frighten your party guests? Yes you will! In this article I will tell you how to use Halloween masks to make up for the “scarcity”.

Halloween masks have somewhat fallen out of favor lately, and I am not sure why! People spend heavily on costumes and other accessories, and don’t pause to think about the importance of Halloween masks. If you want to make a ghoul out of yourself, costumes and makeup are often just not enough, even if you have put on the best costume available in the market!

This is where Halloween masks can help you! Masks help you hide your real identity and put on the identity of someone else for the scary night. No matter how ordinary your costume is, if you put on a suitable mask, you can still become the ghostly figure you wish to be!

There are different types of masks available that cover your face in different ways. There are masks that would cover only your head, only your eyes or both, and then there are ones that cover your entire face. Which mask you would pick up for yourself depends on your personality and the character you want to become!

Make-ups are pretty useless if you use them without Halloween masks, but when you use both, you can truly add a lot of authenticity to your ghoulish character! For example, say that your character requires you to cover your whole face, or only half your face, or just your eyes; in all these cases makeup can help add a more realistic look to your character, provided of course that you have put on the appropriate mask!

When buying Halloween masks, there are a few points to note, especially if you are buying them for your kids:

a) If the mask covers the eyes, their eyeholes should be big enough to help your kids see through them. This would prevent them from tripping or falling off when walking!

b) Masks also need to have tight and secure fastenings. You would not want the mask to fall off suddenly from your face and make a fool of yourself in the party, would you?
